Ways to Extend the Life of an HVAC System

HVAC systems are used all year long. An air conditioner should last between 12 and 15 years. A furnace typically lasts 20 years. If you have lived in an El Paso home long enough, you will need to replace the furnace and air conditioner. This is a huge expense, so it pays to make them last as long as possible. Here are some ways how to extend the life of your HVAC system:

  1. Schedule an annual tune-up. The first thing to do before you get started is to schedule an annual tune-up with a professional HVAC technician who can give your system a thorough once-over and make sure there are no problems that might lead to major breakdowns in the future. Having your unit checked annually is especially important if you live in a climate where winters tend to be particularly chilly or humid.
  2. Keep the area around your outdoor unit clear. Most people probably don’t think about it, but keeping the area around your outdoor unit clear of obstructions can help keep the air flowing smoothly. Clear a path that’s at least 12″ wide around the unit, and stay away from the fan on top of it if possible.
  3. Replace your air filter regularly. The metal filter outside your house can fill with dust over time and prevent air from flowing through it. When this happens, the blower will have to work harder and wear down faster. To prevent this problem, check the metal filter at least once per month—and replace it once or twice per heating season—to ensure that there isn’t so much dust in it that airflow has become restricted.
  4. Invest in a whole-house humidifier. You should also invest in a whole-house humidifier during the cold months, as it will help prevent you from drying out inside as you heat up your home every day. Of course, this is also true of any especially dry areas.
  5. Install a UV light in your ductwork. There might be an invisible problem lurking in your ductwork. If you have UV lights installed anywhere in your home’s HVAC system, make sure they’re replaced every year or two—that way, you can eliminate any problems that could be lurking before they cause big trouble down the road.
  6. Get regular maintenance for your gas furnace. It might sound boring, but regular maintenance on gas furnaces is essential for making sure everything is running as it should be before winter sets in and things start getting really cold.
  7. Consider upgrading your thermostat. Consider upgrading your thermostat for one that lets you control the temperature more precisely, or you can add a timer to ensure that your home is only heating during the hours that it needs it.
