Understanding Your AC’s Refrigerant: What It Does and Why It Matters

Even though summer is almost over, that doesn’t mean the hot air is leaving with it. To keep your AC running as long as you need it, it’s important to know the different parts of the unit and how they work. Here, we will discuss how vital AC refrigerant is to your AC.

What is AC Refrigerant?

Most of the time we don’t really think about how our AC units work until something goes wrong with them and they stop working. The refrigerant inside of the machine is one of the most important components in making it run. This substance is usually found in a fluid or gaseous state and works by absorbing the heat from the surroundings and creating air conditioning when combined with the other components. Understanding just how vital refrigerant is to your unit can help you avoid AC repair in El Paso

How Does it Work?

The refrigerant is located inside the AC’s copper coils. The air conditioner blows the refrigerant outside where a fan then continues to blow the warm air over the coils and out the exterior. The refrigerant then cools back down and turns from a fluid to a gas. A second fan blows the cool air back over the coils thus resulting in a cooler home. This cycle continuously repeats until your home has reached your desired temperature.

If you notice warm air blowing into your home instead of cool air, or you believe something is wrong with the copper coils, reach out to our El Paso shop for AC repair

Why It’s Important

If it’s not obvious yet, refrigerant is extremely important in making sure your AC is running smoothly. It’s the reason your home stays cool in the summer months or regulates the temperatures of commercial spaces. If there is an issue with your refrigerant (i.e. it’s leaking), this could lead to compressor damage, higher energy consumption (aka a more expensive energy bill), and/or reduced cooling effects.
